Brownies is our section for girls aged seven to ten.
Through regular meetings, special events, day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays, Brownies learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors. Girls can also extend their knowledge and abilities by working towards Brownie interest badges covering many different hobbies and activities from Science investigator to Circus skills. Brownies become a member of a Six such as Badger, Fox, Mole, Squirrel, Hedgehog and Rabbit and follow a programme called the Brownie Adventure. The name reflects the world of exciting opportunities, challenges and fun that is Brownies. The Brownie Adventure is divided into three areas: You Community World Becoming a BrownieOnce a girl is ready they can get their Brownie Uniform and take their promise as a Brownie.

Brownie NewsCharlie and the Chocolate FactoryWe had an amazing weekend at Camp House in Spennymoor, with Charlie and the Chocolate factory as our theme. Highlights included crafts, baking and making dens in the woods. The Brownies earned their Brownie Holiday or Holiday advanced badges, Brownie Cook badge and Scrumdilliumpus Challenge.
Autumn Term 2014The girls were busy planning their own evenings, the girls in the More Adventure group made these great sweetie cocktails! We also enjoyed cooking and an international Christmas evening. The girls worked really hard towards their Adventure, Adventure On or More Adventures badges.
Brownie Outdoor Cooking NightGirls enjoyed a BBQ evening, using disposable BBQs to prepare hot dogs and burgers.
Our New Flag!Big Brownie Birthday ChallengeWe have completed our Big Brownie Birthday Challenge with teamwork, pampering, planning around the world trips, fair trade coffee for parents and lots more.
Alice in Wonderland Pack HolidayWe joined Brownies from 1st Boosbeck Brownies at our unit holiday held at Egton Guide House. We enjoyed completing our craft badge with stained glass, pottery painting, sewing and jewellery making. We also cooked with Queen of Hearts, headed out on a treasure hunt, completed challenges and had a Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
Fire Station Visit22 Brownies visited Loftus Fire Station to complete their fire safety badge. The girls learnt about how to prevent fires, what the fire fighters do, smoke alarms and escape plans. They also looked around the equipment and enjoyed using the hoses. Barn Owl even raced a fire fighter at getting ready for an emergency!
Moo Challenge BadgeOver 2 weeks we have been working on our Moo Challenge. The Brownies had lots of opportunities with this moovalous challenge badge. They made milk shakes, ate cow biscuits, made cute cow sock puppets, played games with chocolate, hunted for cows, pined the tail on the cow and lots more. We have enjoyed this theme and well done to 20 girls who successfully completed enough challenges to gain their Moo badge.
Out and About at St Josephs SchoolThe Brownies got out and about at St Joesphs school. They all took part in an orienteering game which went towards their out and about badge. The prize was an opportunity to make smoores over a fire pit. Then they got active on the trim trail, tyres and through playing games. We would like to thank the school for letting us use their grounds.
RNLI Visit18 Brownies travelled up to the RNLI station at nearby Staithes for an evening of information and of course fun! The girls enjoyed finding out about keeping safe on the beach, the work of the RNLI and of course they had fun attacking Brown Owl with a hosepipe! We would like the thank the RNLI for giving up their time to help the Brownies work towards their Water Safety badge.
Moors Transition Camp2 Brownies and 4 Guides joined over 50 girls from around South Langburgh Division for fun and games at the Division's first transition camp. This was to help girls make the move from Brownies up to Guides, and for Guides to share some of their experiences with older Brownies. The girls enjoyed making smoores, playing games, having a campfire, cooking on wood, camping and much more. All of them earned their Campfire Challenge award.
Out and AboutWe have been busy working towards our Out and About badge. we used maps to help us find our way along a walk, answering questions as we went! We are also learning how to keep safe, pack a bag, and read maps.
Brownie Promise Party It was lovely to enrol 13 new Brownies into our unit, don't they look fantastic in their uniforms and new neckers. We are hoping more girls join them over the next few weeks.
Chocolate Challenge BadgeThis term we are working towards the Chocolate Challenge badge designed by 1st Toftwood Brownies. This will involve cooking, crafts, puzzles, games, and a visitor talking about Fair trade. A link to the challenge can be found at 1st Toftwood Brownies
Chocolate themed games! We enjoyed playing a version of the fishes in the sea game using the names of chocolate bars. Very tired Brownies by the end of it!

Opening Night FunWe had 12 girls join us on the opening night! Snowy Owl helped the girls to make their own special Brownie book bags, whilst Brown Owl chatted about their becoming a Brownie Book. The girls also helped to organise themselves into 3 new sixes - Rabbits, Hedgehogs and Squirrels. 3 girls were chosen to be our new sixers and I am sure they will be great at this role! Next week we start our Chocolate challenge badge!
